LOCAL NETWORK SETUP AND INSTALLATION EXAMPLE
The following is an EXAMPLE of how to set up a localnet and send out
update utilities that will be handled automatically by every node in the
localnet. It is NOT meant to be used as is, but followed as an example
only for setting up your own local network.
The following is in two parts: the first will be the KineticNET Docs, and the
second will be the the KineticNET distribution files.
If you are going to use this kit as a pattern for your own localnet
starter kit, be sure to add the AREACODE.NET file from your \vbbs\net
directory into your distribution file. Since this is not a text file,
it could not be included it here, and there is no need, since you have it
already anyway.
PACKING LIST FOR KINETKIT.ZIP, OUR DISTRIBUTION FILE:

Connecticut's first VBBS-based local BBS network

I. About KineticNET
The purpose of KineticNET is multifaceted. First, it serves as a
small, local network of VBBS boards able to bring low cost
networking to those who are starting out as SysOps for the first
time. The idea is to keep as many connects as possible toll free,
while extending services well beyond any one calling area. Second,
it serves it's local community, by the distribution of subs
specifically targeted for local discussion. Hopefully, this will
include news sections and so on from local clubs, schools and so on.
Third, it is to provide a networked file area for shareware files and
for VBBS Support. Finally, it is intended to help promote the VBBS
software, without which such a net would be infinitely more difficult
to initiate, maintain and administer.
II. Joining KineticNET
1. ALL NODES must be coordinated through the NC or Assistant NC.
Anyone running VBBS, full or part time may join KineticNET, as
long as the BBS has hours regular enough to connect to it's
server daily.
2. To obtain a node number, email the Net Coordinator, King Ardmore,
(1@2300 KineticNET, 1@2034 Vnet) uploading the following form. If you have
already arranged a connection with a server, indicate so where
appropriate. To maintain mail flow in as expedient a manner as
possible and at the same time keep toll calls to a minimum, the
net coordinator may suggest an alternate server. The purpose of
the following form is only to gather appropriate data to properly
administer the net, not for exclusionary purposes.
III. Setting up KineticNET
1. Set up KineticNET as network #15 (LOCAL NET) in VCONFIG after
obtaining your node number from the NC. Make the path to
KineticNET \VBBS\LNET.
2. Add LCLMGMNT.BAT to your daily events in Vconfig. In order for
LCLMGMNT.BAT to work properly, it assumes that you have not
altered the default VBBS installation with regard to paths. If
VBBS is not in the \VBBS directory, and the temporary directory
is not \VBBS\TEMP, then you may have to adjust the batch file
accordingly. There is usually no good reason to modify the
default installation regarding these paths. Add required and
desired KineticNET subs to your Message base configuration and
the run SORT and COMPILE network configurations in VCONFIG.
3. Unzip the KINETKIT.ZIP distribution file into a temporary
directory ON THE SAME DRIVE AS \VBBS and run the INSTALL.BAT
file. This will install the net directory, copying the network
and maintenance files where they need to be, and compile the
network node list for the first time. Congratulations: You
have just completed the KineticNET installation. KINETIC.SUB and
the BBSLIST updates will appear in your \VBBS\LNET directory as
automatic updates from the Subslist Coordinator and the Net
Coordinator.
IV. Joining/Hosting Subs in KineticNET
1. ALL SUBS must be coordinated through the Sub Coordinator (#1@2301
KineticNET, 1@2032 Vnet, 1@2314 WWIVnet).
2. Physically adding subs, both unsecured and secured, is done
through the same convention as adding Vnet subs in Vconfig, except
that they are added for LOCAL NET. Requesting secured subs from
the host is also done in the same manner as in Vnet.
3. Gating of subs between KineticNET and other nets is permissible as
long as the gate is approved by the sub hosts in each net.
4. The following are REQUIRED KineticNET unsecured subs, all sysops
must subscribe and SCAN. General conversation will NOT be allowed
on these subs in a effort to keep the time necessary to scan them
down.
Type Name Description Gate ACC/Tag/Rate
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1 KineticNET Herald KineticNET News None V/Y/G
2 KineticNET Court Resolve diffs/problems None V/Y/G
V. Net Policy
1. Disputes between any two parties can be settled via the KineticNET
Court sub, which will be moderated by the SysOps, who will
collectively have one vote, the NC, who will have one vote, and
the Assistant NC, who will also have one vote. When ACs are
added, they will also collectively have one vote.
2. KineticNET is intended to be suitable for reading by anyone's
mother or children. This does not mean that there is no place for
adult topics. Secured subs may be utilized for adult material. In
G - flagged subs, no profanity or adult material shall be
permitted.
3. Flaming should be to a minimum. Conversation on all subs should
be kept reasonably topical. Remember, you are free to start/join
subs on virtually any topic, or start/join a sub where ANYTHING is
topical.
3. This network, like Vnet, will consist of several network officers,
who will work together to develop net policy as needed. The
network officers reserve the right to remove any system from the
network to preserve it's integrity. At this time, the officers
are:
Net Coordinator, 1@2300, King Ardmore
Assistant Net & Subslist Coodinator, 1@2301, David Bell
AC positions will be awarded at the NC's & ANC's discretion as
and if needed.
4. The net must not be used for any illegal activity, i.e., no
software pirating, chain letters, illegal scheming or activity of
any sort. Violation of this rule will re
